SUMMARY:
The Malaysian government is calling on the private sector to view decarbonisation as an essential long-term corporate strategy to help boost economic growth while the nation shifts away from fossil fuels.
In fact, the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), released in mid 2023 states the aim to derive 70% of Malaysia’s energy supply from renewables by 2050, a more exacting goal than the previous 40% by 2035.
The plan identifies 10 projects aimed at achieving this goal, including the construction of renewable energy zones and creating demand for biomass.
This Niaga Spotlight discussion highlights perspectives on how both big business and the average Malaysian consumer can take action to ensure Malaysia’s green future through Environmental Economics, a branch of economics that focuses on the relationship between economic activity and the environment.
Some of the key issues related to environmental economics include pollution, climate change, natural resource management, environmental policy design, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
